Short sjambok (kiboko)

"Kiboko" means Hippopotamus, whose hide was used to make this vicious whip. The kiboko is the typical sjambok. Also sjamboks of other types of hide exist, they are called litupa. This black kiboko is about 39" (1m) long, as thick as a finger, with a slightly glossy surface. There is a plaited knob with wrist loop, made from a single strand of leather. Despite its age (dated 1890!) this whip is still flexible and would be ready to use!
