The dura or "schalalq" is a corporal punishment whip commonly used in Afghanistan. It is made of five layers of leather, forming a solid paddle about 7mm thick.
The whip carries a stamp of its maker, "Sheerzad Leather Shop Kabul". According to a German TV report they still make these and sell them as a kind of "novelty item". (10/26/2002)
